Business Chain - Suppliers

What are the challenges?

There are a whole variety of social, economic and environmental risks associated with the Business Chain. Further up the supply chain, the extraction of raw materials can be harmful to the environment if not carried out in a sustainable way, and may put workers’ lives and health at risk under poor labour conditions.

What is Sonae Sierra doing about them?

In 2007 Sonae Sierra developed and formally approved a Responsible Procurement Policy with the aim to privilege the use of environmentally-friendly materials, integrate CR-related criteria into the Service Suppliers Management Procedures and engage with our suppliers with a view to encouraging them to improve their CR performance.

On the construction site, we seek to engage closely with our contractors in order to mitigate our environmental impacts through the application of the ESRD and to promote safe working practices. The Safe Practice Index (SPI) tool across development projects is used to assess the extent to which contractors’ personnel are committed to and aware of safety issues.

Sierra measures on-site performance in relation to electricity consumption, water use and waste production. In 2007 Sonae Sierra achieved its highest construction recycling rates on completed projects to date – 92% at 8a Avenida in Portugal and 100% at El Rosal in Spain.
