Sonae Sierra’s Sustainability Services cover the whole lifecycle of a project, offering a comprehensive range of solutions to Real Estate developers, operators, and investors, targeting compliance and risk mitigation, operational excellence and reputation management.
We provide a wide range of high quality services, from construction and building certification, to the efficient management of utilities consumption in retail assets and best in class safety, health and environmental management systems.

Sustainability Services in Investment Management

Our approach is to support assets or funds’ investment decisions ensuring sustainability features contribute to increase asset resilience and value.

Key credentials

  • In the development of new shopping centres (including office towers), 26 Sonae Sierra construction sites have achieved ISO 14001 certification and 10 have achieved OHSAS 18001 certification.
  • 49 ISO 14001 certifications have been achieved at operational shopping centres since 2005, and OHSAS 18001 certifications have been achieved at 44 operational shopping centres since 2008.
  • Since 2003, our water consumption has decreased by 23%, our electricity consumption has decreased by 47% (since 2002) and our waste recycling rate (since 2002) has increased 239% (55 percent points) from 19% to 64%.
  • Our environmental management practices were first established in 1999 and we have been improving them ever since. In 2017, our company was able to avoid costs of €24.5 million, due to the implementation of energy, water and waste efficiency measures.
  • Our Bright Programme enabled energy consumption reduction by 10% in our shopping centres and saved €2.3 million in costs in 2017. Measures in pipeline will avoid up to an additional €1.3 million in costs on an annual basis. The programme was externally recognized with the Silver Stevie® Award and shortlisted for the EU Sustainable Energy Award.
  • Our Carbon Footprint is 73% less when compared to 2005 performance, resulting in 83,100 tCO2e avoided emissions in 2017. See details in this infographic.
